Therapist in Mission Viejo for Individuals, Couples, and Families

Available in-person in Mission Viejo and online across California.

If you’ve found your way here, I want to say something important up front: you are not broken. You may feel exhausted. Disconnected. Like you’ve been holding your breath for years. You may carry pain in your body, stories in your mind, and questions in your heart. That's not weakness. It's wisdom trying to be heard.

Katherine Barton, MA, LMFT

Healing Isn't a Destination, It's a Gentle Return to Yourself

Hi, I’m Katherine.

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Orange County, California, and my work is rooted in this belief: healing happens in safe spaces, with trusted people, over time. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, navigating past trauma, working through relationship pain, or simply longing to feel more like yourself again; I’m here to walk alongside you.

This isn’t therapy that pressures or pathologizes. It’s therapy that holds space, invites curiosity, and honors the full story of who you are.

“Where do I even begin. My work with Katherine has been nothing short of transformational. She has held the safest, most compassionate space for me to unravel, heal, and grow into the person I am today. The IFS work we've done together was immediately powerful and has created changes that continue to ripple through my life. Through our sessions, I've been able to do deep inner child healing that has softened parts of me that were carrying so much pain for so long. Because of Katherine, I feel more connected to myself, more grounded in my body, and more trusting of my own voice.”

Who I Help

No two people walk through my door with the same story. But many share similar feelings: the weight of “holding it all together,” the ache of disconnection, the sense that something isn't quite right, even if life looks fine on the outside.

Here are some of the clients I most often support:

Whether it’s emotional labor, perfectionism, or long-held self-doubt, many women feel stretched thin. Therapy for women with me often includes learning how to listen to your body, set healthy boundaries, and reimagine self-worth that isn’t tied to productivity.

Trauma isn't just what happened. It's what lingers in your nervous system afterward. You may feel hypervigilant, numb, quick to anger, or disconnected from your body. We’ll work together to help you feel safer in your own skin through trauma counseling that meets you where you are.

You may be struggling with trust, communication, or emotional intimacy. As a therapist trained in relational dynamics and attachment-based work, I help couples learn to speak honestly, listen fully, and reconnect, whether you're in crisis or simply feeling distant.

Parenting brings out our deepest fears and hopes. If you’re working to parent differently than you were parented, or if you find yourself reacting in ways that surprise or upset you, we'll explore how to build compassion, repair, and resilience into your family system.

You don’t need a specific diagnosis to seek help. If you’re unsure what's wrong, but something inside you knows it’s time to reach out, that's enough. Together, we’ll explore what’s beneath the surface and work toward healing from the inside out.

My Approach

The Therapy Experience

Walking into therapy can feel vulnerable, especially if you’ve been dismissed, judged, or misunderstood in the past. That’s why my first priority is creating a space where your nervous system can breathe. A space where nothing is “too much” and you never have to perform or prove your pain. (Explore my therapeutic approaches)

A collaborative approach

We’ll work together, not in a top-down dynamic. You are the expert on your story, and I simply help illuminate the paths within it.

A trauma-informed foundation

I draw on modalities like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), somatic techniques, and parts work to support deep healing that goes beyond words.

A pace that honors your readiness

Some clients open up quickly. Others need time. Both are welcome. There is no rush, no pressure, and no expectation to “get better” on a timeline.

A focus on the body, not just the brain

Anxiety, trauma, and grief don’t live in the mind alone. They show up in our breath, our posture, our tension. We’ll gently invite the body into the conversation.

“Katherine has been my therapist for four years. She helped me get through the hardest thing in my life. Getting a divorce from a man who I was married to for 40 years. I didn’t think I would ever laugh or smile again but with the help of Katherine I am stronger than ever. I have my smile back. I am living my best life. If I was not doing good all I had to do is text her and she answered me even though it was not my appointment time or day. I always knew that I could text her no matter what time or day it was. She pulled me out of some of my darkest days thank you so much Katherine.”

Common Reasons People Reach Out

People reach out for many reasons but often it starts with a feeling that something isn’t quite right. You may feel anxious, disconnected, overwhelmed, or stuck, even if life looks fine on the outside. Below are some of the most common reasons clients seek support, and each reflects a different doorway into healing.

What Makes This Different

My therapy practice in Orange County, CA offers individual, couples, and family support. I work with clients in-person and online, offering flexible options to meet your needs.

Never be reduced to a label.

Diagnoses can be helpful, but they are not the whole story. You are more than a checklist, and therapy should reflect that.

You set the pace.

If you need to go slow, we go slow. If you’re ready to dive in, we’ll do so safely. There’s no formula, just attunement.

You are welcome as you are.

Messy, unsure, guarded, grieving, or hopeful, you don't need to clean yourself up to belong here. Come as you are. That’s where healing begins.

Getting Started Is Simple

If you're considering therapy but feel nervous to reach out, you're not alone. Starting therapy can stir up fear, resistance, or uncertainty. That’s okay.

Here's how to begin, gently:

1

Book a free 15-minute phone consultation

We’ll talk briefly about what’s bringing you in and whether it feels like a good fit.

2

Have your first session

In this full session, we’ll begin exploring your story, needs, and hopes for the work.

3

Begin ongoing therapy at a pace that feels safe

Weekly, bi-weekly, or as needed, your healing process will be unique to you.

“Katherine is fantastic! She has so much knowledge in IFS and other therapies. She’s always professional and very caring. I always look forward to working with and learning from her.”
